Oh, am I ready for Easter.
The hosannas echoed during the Palm Sunday service I attended at Westminster Abbey in London quickly shifted to no-sannas once I cam home. (I suppose that’s how the story goes, though, isn’t it?) I returned to Seattle from my pilgrimage with everything as I had left it—boxes strewn around the house waiting for a place to be stored, a backyard in renovation ruins, and a basement apartment still in progress even though it was supposed to be done well before I left. And then, of course, there’s taxes…
I am hungry for new life, and the blossoming trees and budding flowers that greeted me upon my return only deepen that yearning. I’m longing for resurrection. I’m ready for Easter.
And yet here we are, nearing the end of Holy Week. On this not-so-good Friday we’re invited not to skip to the good stuff, but rather to descend into death, grief, uncertainty, waiting. It’s an uncomfortable, counter-cultural practice that is filled with tension. But it’s only when we immerse ourselves in the emotions of Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, and Holy Saturday that we fully know the joy that is Easter Sunday.
After all, if we are to celebrate new Life, we must first surrender to death.
